Krn Lake

Krn Lake is situated at an elevation of 1340 meters. It is 400 meters long and 17 meters deep, making it the largest high-altitude lake in Slovenia. During the interwar period, small but voracious fish called “pisanci” (Phoxinus leavis) were introduced into the lake, serving as food for the trout that have also thrived in this environment.

Krn Lake almost entirely floods a basin at the foot of Mount Krn and is surrounded by sparse spruce trees. Moments during the tranquil sunset, when one gazes from the shore at the rocky silhouettes of the peaks above, are serene. Nearby is Dupeljsko Lake, which is smaller and shallower than Krn Lake. Just above, lies the newly constructed mountain hut of the PD Nova Gorica mountaineering club.
