The most renowned inhabitant of the emerald river is the Soča trout. Salmo trutta marmoratus is the largest European trout and an indigenous fish of the northern Mediterranean.
Its elongated cylindrical body features a distinctive olive-brown marbled pattern and a relatively large head. This unique member of the animal kingdom in the Soča River is classified as a threatened species.
